ABOUT IES


Indian Engineering Services Examination, UPSC (Union Public Service commission) conducts Engineering Services Examination for recruitment in various engineering services/posts in various Government Departments. The recruitment is done for four categories: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering.
The selection through Engineering Services Examination is through two stages: Written Tests & Personality Test. Only the candidates who qualify the written tests are called for personality test. The written tests are of 1000 marks while personality test is of 200 marks. 

PATTERN


PATTERN
The Examination is conducted according to the following plan:-
Part I—The written Examination will comprise two sections—Section I consisting only of objective types of questions and Section II of conventional papers. Both Sections will cover the entire syllabus of the relevant engineering disciplines viz. Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering 2 below.
Part II—Personality test carrying a maximum of 200 marks of such of the candidates who qualify on the basis of the written examination.

GENERAL ABILITY TEST SYLLABUS :



Part A : General English. The question paper in General English will be designed to test the candidate’s understanding of English and workmanlike use of words.
Part B : General Studies: The paper in General Studies will include knowledge of current events and of such matters as of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of an educated person. The paper will also include questions on History of India and Geography of a nature which candidates should be able to answer without special study

NOTE : IES Syllabus for GS & Englis for all branches are same.
Total = 120 Question carry 200 Marks.
Time: 2 Hour

GENERAL ABILITY TEST PREPARATION STRATEGY:

In Part A of paper I, 60 questions for 100 marks are given to test candidate’s basic ability in English language. Usually candidates are supposed to answer questions on Synonyms, Antonyms, Articles, Prepositions, Spotting errors Comprehension Passages etc. Candidate whose background is from vernacular medium up to intermediate and are from rural areas have to pay enough attention on this section. In Part B of paper I, 60 questions for 100 marks are given to test candidates general ability on Indian history, Geography Indian Politics, Science and Technology, Public Administration, Current Affairs etc. The questions on Current Affairs will have a lion share. Questions on Census, Corporate Governance, Election Commission, World Bank, Terrorism, Recent Environmental summit, formation of new states, Haiti Earthquake, Sports Awards and other latest events and current affairs, are likely to be asked. Questions under Science and Technology may be on Diseases, Vaccines, Agriculture, space research are also important. Previous papers for the last ten years can give you an insight into the nature of questions. Solving old papers can really be helpful for the preparation of this exam. Reading News papers like The Hindu, Times of India every day and making notes on important events and news can be handy to tackle this section
