ABOUT IES


Indian Engineering Services Examination, UPSC (Union Public Service commission) conducts Engineering Services Examination for recruitment in various engineering services/posts in various Government Departments. The recruitment is done for four categories: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering.
The selection through Engineering Services Examination is through two stages: Written Tests & Personality Test. Only the candidates who qualify the written tests are called for personality test. The written tests are of 1000 marks while personality test is of 200 marks.

PATTERN
The Examination is conducted according to the following plan:-
Part I—The written Examination will comprise two sections—Section I consisting only of objective types of questions and Section II of conventional papers. Both Sections will cover the entire syllabus of the relevant engineering disciplines viz. Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering 2 below.
Part II—Personality test carrying a maximum of 200 marks of such of the candidates who qualify on the basis of the written examination.

GENERAL ABILITY TEST SYLLABUS :



Part A : General English. The question paper in General English will be designed to test the candidate’s understanding of English and workmanlike use of words.
Part B : General Studies: The paper in General Studies will include knowledge of current events and of such matters as of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of an educated person. The paper will also include questions on History of India and Geography of a nature which candidates should be able to answer without special study

NOTE : IES Syllabus for GS & Englis for all branches are same.
Total = 120 Question carry 200 Marks.
Time: 2 Hour

GENERAL ABILITY TEST PREPARATION STRATEGY:

In Part A of paper I, 60 questions for 100 marks are given to test candidate’s basic ability in English language. Usually candidates are supposed to answer questions on Synonyms, Antonyms, Articles, Prepositions, Spotting errors Comprehension Passages etc. Candidate whose background is from vernacular medium up to intermediate and are from rural areas have to pay enough attention on this section. In Part B of paper I, 60 questions for 100 marks are given to test candidates general ability on Indian history, Geography Indian Politics, Science and Technology, Public Administration, Current Affairs etc. The questions on Current Affairs will have a lion share. Questions on Census, Corporate Governance, Election Commission, World Bank, Terrorism, Recent Environmental summit, formation of new states, Haiti Earthquake, Sports Awards and other latest events and current affairs, are likely to be asked. Questions under Science and Technology may be on Diseases, Vaccines, Agriculture, space research are also important. Previous papers for the last ten years can give you an insight into the nature of questions. Solving old papers can really be helpful for the preparation of this exam. Reading News papers like The Hindu, Times of India every day and making notes on important events and news can be handy to tackle this section

PART - B CIVIL ENGINEERING

(Each portion to have roughly equal weight age)
A. ENGINEERING MATERIALS & CONSTRUCTION TECHONOLOGY
Selection of site for the construction of various types of buildings: Planning and orientation of buildings. Bonds in masonry. Damp proof course. Scaffolding, underpinning and ranking. Floors. Staircases. Roofs. Doors and Windows. Requirements of fire protection. Ventilation and air conditioning and acoustics. Building and highway materials and their IS codal provisions. Stones, Bricks, timber, Lime, Cement, Mortar, Plain and reinforced Cement Concrete, Bitumen, Asphalt.
B. SURVEYING
Generally adopted Scales, Chain and Compass surveying ; Leveling ; temporary and permanent adjustments of levels and Theodolite. Use of Theodolite, tacheometry, Trigonometrical and Triangulation survey. Traversing and Traverse Adjustment, Contours and contouring, Simple Circular Compound and Transition Curves and their setting out, Theory of erros and survey adjustment. Computations of areas and volumes.
C. SOIL/ GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEEING
Classification of soil as per I.S. code, Field identification tests for soils; water content, specific gravity, voids ratio, porosity, degree saturation; unit weight, density index etc; and their inter  relationship, determinations of various properties of soils as noted above as well as grain size distribution, consistency limits etc.
Soil permeability and its determination in the laboratory and field; Darcy's law, Flow nets, its Characteristics and uses.
Compaction and consolidation of soil. Quality control, soil stabilization methods. Boussinesq's methods. Newmark's chart and its uses.
Shear strength parameters and their determination Bearing capacity, local and general shear failures, design Criteria for shallow foundation, Plate load test and standerd penetration test. Earth pressures on retaining wall. Stability of simple slopes. Significant depth of exploration, design features of undisturbed sampler.
D. STRUCTURAL MECHANICS
Stress and strains, elastic constants, factor of safety, relation among elastic constants. Bending moment and shear force diagrams for cantilever, simply supported and overhanging, fixed and continuous beams subjected to static loads :- concentrated, uniformly distributed and uniformly varying. Theory of simple bending. Shear Stress, Influence lines.
Deflection of cantilever, simply supported fixed and continuous beams. Determinate and Indeterminate structures and frames pin jointed, Plane and space frames.
E. STEEL STRUCTURES
Design of ordinary and plate girder beams, roof trusses welded joints, axially and eccentrically loaded columns, Grillage, Gusseted and slab base foundations. Provisions of IS : 800 and 875. Economic span of bridges.
F. REINFORCED CONCRETE STRUCTURES
Provisions of latest IS : 456, design of beams singly and doubly reinforced, design of shear reinforcement. Design of slabs spanning in two directions and T-beam slabs. Design of column axially and uniaxially eccentrically loaded. Design of isolated and combined column footings : Design of simple RCC cantilever and counterfort retaining walls. Reinforcement in overhead and underground water tanks.
G. FLUID MECHANICS INCLUDING HYDROLOGY AND IRRIGATION
Hydraulic pressure at a point and its measurement. total pressure and centre of pressure on plane and curved immensed surfaces, Buoyancy. conditions of equilibrium of floating bodies; fluid flow conditions, Bernoulli's, Navier-Stokes, Reynold's equations, flow through orifices venturimeter, notches and wires, flow through pipes and open channels, Gradually and rapidly varied flow, Dimensional analysis, Momentum and angular momentum principles as applied to fluid in a control volume, applications of jets, Viscous flow, concept of drag, flow through pipes. Engineering hydrology; Hydrology of floods and drought reservoirs and dams; overflow structures, ground water hydrology. Irrigation: canals, Kennedy's Lacey's theories, Khosla's theories for design of hydraulic structures. Ground water and well irrigation, water logging.
H. PUBLIC HEALTH ENGINEERING
Per capita requirement of water for urban and rural areas, Forecast of population. Sources. Water supply standards of purity of public water supplies with various methods of purification; House drainage system Distribution network with all the ancillaries: system of drainage. Layout of sewerage systems. Primary, secondary treatments, trickling filters, lagoons and other treatment units and their design criteria. Flushing of sewers; sewage treatment; rural water supply and sanitation.
I. HIGHWAY AND BRIDGES
Principles of highway planning; classification of road land width, building line, center line, formation width, terrain classification, pavement width, Camber, longitudinal gradient sight distance, horizontal curve, super elevation, vertical curve, lateral and vertical clearances.
Flexible pavements. Sub-base, base course and shoulder stone / Kankar brick soling, WBM courses, shoulders. Granular sub-base, stabilized soil roads cement / lime stabilized sub base, sand bitumen base course, crushed cement concrete base/sub-base course.
Prime and tack coats, surface dressing, open graded premix carpet, semi dense carpet, build-up spray grout base course, bituminous base binder course. Asphaltic concrete, seal coats, mixed seal surfacing. Penetration macadam base/binder course, full and semi groups.
Traffic Engineering : traffic characteristics, road user characteristics, vehicular characteristics, volume, speed and delay studies origin and destination study, traffic flow characteristics, traffic capacity and parking studies, traffic regulation, traffic control devices, Intersection control.
Alignment: traffic engineering, pavem design, paving materials and highway construction and maintenance of different types of roads. Need for highway drainage and arboriculture, types of bridges: choice of type of bridge, economical considerations of fixing spans culverts.



PART-B ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

1. Electrical Circuits: Circuit components, KCL and KVL, network graphs, Methods of circuit analysis, Nodal and Mesh analysis, Analysis of D.C. and A.C. networks. Network theorems: Basic network theorems and applications. Network Functions: Driving point and transfer functions, poles and zeros of network functions. Response of networks to standard input signals. Two-port networks, Elementary network synthesis, different type of network parameters, signal flow graphs, Fourier series, Laplace transforms and their applications. Frequency response, Resonant circuits and applications. Threephase balanced and unbalanced networks. Steady state response with sinusoidal input. Transient response: Transient analysis of RL, RC and RLC circuits.
2. Field Theory: Electrostatic and Magnetostatics : Electrostatics and electrical fields, Magnetostatics and magnetic fields, Field in conductors and in magnetic materials, field in dielectrics, Maxwell's equations and time varying fields. Electromagnetic wave equations. Plane wave propagation in conducting and dielectric media.
3. Electrical Materials: Classification of materials on the basis of permanent magnetic dipoles, Electrical and electronic behaviour of materials, classification on the basis of conductivity. Behaviour of dielectrics in static and alternating fields. Phenomenon of polarization. Super conductivity. Applications of magnetic, conducting, dielectric and insulating materials.
4. Electrical Measurement and Instrumentation: General principles of measurement : Unit and dimensions. Standards error analysis, Basic methods of measurement, Measurement of circuit parameters by bridge methods. Measuring Instrument: Indicating Instruments, Integrating Instruments, Recording instruments. 7. Power Electronics: Power semiconductor devices, Thyristor, triac, GTO, MOSFET. Static characteristics and triggering circuits. A.C. to D.C. Converters, choppers. Controlled and uncontrolled power rectifiers, Bridge converters.
8. Control System: Open and closed loop systems. Block diagrams and signal flow graphs. Response analysis time domain, frequency domain; steady state error analysis. Root locus technique, bode plots, Routh-Hurwitz, and Nyquist criteria of stability. State space analysis of linear systems.
9. Electrical Machines: Construction, Principles of operation, equivalent circuits, basic characteristics and applications of Distribution and Power transformers. Single phase induction motors. Threephase induction motors. Alternators, Synchronous motors.
10. Power systems: Generation: thermal generation, Hydro generation, Nuclear Generation. Nonconventional energy sources. Transmission and Distribution. PART-B MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Laws of friction, brakes and dynamometers, types of gears and gears trains. Part-1 "RPSC AEn-2013 Interview preparation blog"

Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC) invited online application for Assistant Engineer's 329 posts in Rajasthan Government's various departments in March,2013. Vacancy distribution as :

Answer - Yes.

Answer - Sir, Ground water level goes very deep level.

Answer - sir, we can rise water level by constructing/making dams, jihad, pond  & other traditional methods.

Answer - Sir, we can connect Alwar & near about area by canal network of Haryana, which is already available upto Revari, Bawal etc.

Answer - Mainly from Ground water resources & Rain water storage.

Q. - If you are an Assistant Engineer of PHED in that area how you provide water supply in that particular area other than above methods?
Answer - Sir, we can store & conserve rain water by making more ponds, anicut, Johad etc.

Q. If there are restriction to making such things than what you do?
Answer - Sir, we can provide water supply them by other substitute.

Q. What's?
Answer -  Sir, we can develop PHED water supply pipe line network as permanent solution and water supply by tankers till completion of pipe line water supply.

Q. - You have knowledge of illegal Mining in Aravali range?
Answer - yes.

Q. - Lets assume that you are a administrator I.e. RAS officer in that area. What you do, so illegal mining not happens?
Answer - Sir, we can aware the local people & Minners for not doing illegal mining and take license from Govt for mining.

Q. - Ohh! This is not possible because Rajasthan High Court fully banned all kind mining activities in Aravali mountains range. So, suggest other options?
Answer - Sir, we can take legel action against persons which involve in mining activities, fine them.

Q. - Other than this what's you do?
Answer - Sir, we can suggest other measures as substitute I.e. brick for minned material like stone.

Q. - In Alwar there is a famous lake?
Answer - yes.

Q. - Names?
Answer - Silisedh.

Q. - What is the reason behind continues decrease in catchment area of Silisedh lake?
Answer - Unnauthorized ancrochment I.e. Atikraman.

Q. - If you are an Engineer what to you do prevent such thing?
Answer - Spreading the  awareness in  the local people about hazards of this & property loss. Doing such necessary action, so such activities no happen.

Q. - You listen about Medha Patkar?
Answer - yes.

Q. - Who is Medha Patkar & why famous?
Answer - Sir, medha Patkar is an environmental activist. She is famous regarding Sardar Sarovar dam.

Q. - What is her demands & what she want?
Answer - Medha Patkar wants there is no further increment in Sardar Sarovar dam height. If dam height further increases than catchment area spreading I.e. cause for lot of peoples displacement, loss of bread & butter.

Q. Are you against or in favour of Medha Patkar?
Answer - Upto certain extent i support Medha Patkar.

Q. - Why?
Answer  - I wants development but no compromise with affected people's life. You can develop or construct dam but before construction must provide them alternative for residence & livelihood.

Q.- Is there any such problem in Sariska Tiger Century project?
Answer - Yes. But Rajasthan Govt & local adminstration has aware about this problem.

Q. -  You have knowledge of Bisalpur Jaipur Water supply project?
Answer - Yes.

Q. Bisalpur dam is constructed on which river?
Answer - No. But Saini sir tells himself I.e. Banas river near Deoli in Tonk district,

Q. - From where Banas river originated?
Answer - No, but  Saini sir tells himself i.e. The Banas originates in the Khamnor Hills of the Aravalli Range, about 5 km from Kumbhalgarh in Rajsamband district.

Q. - From where it ends or meets in other river?
Answer - No,
but Saini sir tells himself I.e. meets the Chambal near the village of Rameshwar in Sawai Madhopur District.

Q. - Which district are taking benefit of this?
Answer -  Ajmer, Jaipur & Tonk.

Q. - There is any dispute regarding distribution of water?
Answer - Sorry sir, I have no idea.
Saini Sir to me -  Its like Krishna River Water Dispute.

Answer - No.
